If the Google Calendar widget is too plain for you, try DigiCal or Business Calendar 2 for more widget types, or Super Agenda if you want a styled agenda list. Most of these apps still show your Google Calendar events, so you do not have to move your data.

Why people switch from the Google Calendar widget
The Google Calendar widget does its job. It is free, it comes from the same app that holds your events, and it is easy to find. Google's help page lists two widget types: a schedule widget for tasks and upcoming events, and a month view widget. The Play listing for the app shows no ads and no in-app purchases.
People look for another widget for a few reasons:
They want more widget types than the two on the help page.
They want to choose colors, text size or transparency. The help page does not describe style settings.
They want to keep Google Calendar as the place for events, but see them in a different layout.
They use work or other accounts on the phone and want one widget to show them.
The steps to add Google's widget may differ by phone. Read our Super Agenda vs the Google Calendar widget comparison for a direct look.
1. DigiCal: Best for many widget types
Android. Free with ads, with a paid DigiCal+ upgrade. The DigiCal listing names six widgets for the list, grid, day, day list, text month and month views. It offers nine preset themes. The developer's site says you can fully customize the look with a color picker and font presets, and that the widgets can go on the lock screen. It syncs with Google Calendar, Outlook and Exchange.
Replaces the Google widget's:
Schedule list (the list widget)
Month view (the month widgets)
Does not replace:
Tasks next to events. The DigiCal listing does not mention tasks.
Trade-offs:
The free version shows ads. DigiCal+ removes them. The listing says it also unlocks two extra widgets and more widget options.
The billing type of DigiCal+ is not stated on the developer's site.
2. Business Calendar 2: Best for widgets plus tasks
Android, Wear OS. Free with ads, with a Pro upgrade. The Business Calendar 2 listing offers seven widgets (month, week, day, agenda and more), a choice of widget theme, and the option to adapt each widget. It syncs through Android calendar sync, so it shows Google Calendar. It also connects Google Tasks.
Replaces the Google widget's:
Schedule list (the agenda widget)
Month view
Tasks beside events
Does not replace:
A light, widget-only setup. It is a full planner.
Trade-offs:
The free version has ads. In-app purchases unlock Pro.
It is a full planner, so it is more app than you need if you only want a widget. See the Business Calendar 2 alternatives for lighter options.

3. Samsung Calendar: Best on a Samsung phone
Android. Free. The Samsung Calendar listing says you can add various calendars, including Google Calendar. It lists several widget types with adjustable transparency. It shows year, month, week, day and task views, and weekly weather. Check that the app works on your phone before you switch.
Replaces the Google widget's:
A choice of widget types, with adjustable transparency
Tasks (the listing names a task view)
Does not replace:
Shared calendars. The listing does not mention them.
Trade-offs:
It is Samsung's own app. Add your Google account to it and check that the widget shows the same events as the app.
The listing gives no list of widget sizes or styles.
4. Microsoft Outlook: Best if you work in Microsoft 365
Android. Free for personal use. The Outlook listing says it supports Exchange, Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud and IMAP. Microsoft's help page says the Outlook Calendar widget lets you choose which calendars from your accounts to show. The listing shows ads and in-app purchases, and some features need a Microsoft subscription.
Replaces the Google widget's:
A calendar widget on the home screen
A choice of calendars from several accounts
Does not replace:
A widget with style options. Microsoft's page describes only the calendar choice.
A calendar-only app. Outlook is a mail app first.
Trade-offs:
You install a large mail app to get a widget.
The best fit is a Microsoft 365 or Exchange work account.
5. Super Agenda: Best for a styled agenda list
Android 8.0 and newer. Free to download, with one one-time in-app purchase, Super Agenda Pro. This is our own app, so read our claims with that in mind. It is a home screen agenda widget. It shows events from the calendars on your phone, including Google Calendar and any account that syncs to the Android calendar. It has no account, no ads, and no sync of its own.
Replaces the Google widget's:
Schedule list, with optional day headers and an optional timeline
Toolbar with the date, a big date, or a date with the month
Buttons to add an event, refresh and open settings
Does not replace:
A month grid, tasks, weather or lock screen widgets
Wallpaper-based dynamic colors (Material You color extraction)
Trade-offs:
Colors, layouts, per-widget styles, presets and day and night themes need Super Agenda Pro. The time settings and the calendar choice are free.
It is not a calendar app. A tap on an event opens it in your calendar app.
